Lady Rebels open new home schedule with dominant 25-point victory

Junior guard Alyssa Durazo-Frescas caught fire in the second half while senior center Desi-Rae Young put forth another doble-double as the Lady Rebels continued their dominance at home.

UNLV beat College of Charleston Friday, Nov. 10 from the Cox Pavilion in the team’s home opener. Last season, the program went undefeated and have now won 18 straight home games dating back to last year. Additionally, head coach Lindy La Rocque is 40-12 at home during her four-year tenure with the Lady Rebels.

The home opener marked the start of a three-game homestand for UNLV which will continue Tuesday, Nov. 14 from the Cox Pavilion. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Durazo-Frescas scored 14 of her team-high 21 points in the second half, highlighted by 11 points in the third quarter. The Newport Beach native went 3-for-4 from three-point range in the third quarter on the way to a game-high five made threes.

Young posted her second straight double-double to open the year with 18 points and 10 rebounds. As a result, the Lady Rebels won the points in the paint category, 34-22, while wrestling 51 rebounds away from the Cougars.

Everybody in uniform played with all but two players scoring at least three points.

UNLV racked up 22 assists on 32 made field goals. Guard Kiara Jackson burst out to start the game with seven points in the first-two plus minutes of the game before finishing with seven points, three assists, two rebounds and a steal in eight first quarter minutes before picking up her second foul. She’d add two more assists, two more rebounds and another steal to her final stat line.

Ultimately, it was another decisive defensive clinic put on by La Rocque’s group. Through the first two games of the new year, the Lady Rebels’ defense has limited its opponents to 36% from the field and 22% from three-point range.

College of Charleston was handcuffed to the tune of 31% shooting including a 16%-mark from deep in this one. After already building a double-digit lead in the first quarter, UNLV used a 19-2 run to put the game out of reach.

The Cougars never led in this one while the Lady Rebels led by as many as 33 points.

UNLV forced College of Charleston into 18 turnovers, converting them into 16 points the other way. In addition, the team ranked up a 16-1 mark in fast break points as a result of the miscues.
