After an up-and-down start the Vegas Knight Hawks pulled out their second straight win over the Northern Arizona Wranglers, 43-37, Saturday, May 3 from Lee’s Family Forum..
Receiver Tamerion Terry had a monster game as he lead the way with five catches, 41 receiving yards and three total receiving touchdowns. This was a breakout game for Terry as he has now solidified his place amongst an already elite receiving core in his first game with the Knight Hawks.
While Terry had a big individual game he recognized the improved offense as a whole.
“I would definitely say that we are clicking a little bit more,” he said. “We just have to limit the penalties, once we get that done everything is going to roll pretty good.”
Head coach Mike Davis also had high praise for Terry mentioning what he brings to the receiving group.
“He’s been good,” Davis said. “You always want weapons, where you can’t double Quentin [Randolph] or CJ [Windham] while he’s on the field so he just adds to us and the better we get offensively the more potent it will be offensively.”
This was the second straight game that quarterback Jayden De Laura got the starting nod over reigning league MVP Ja’Rome Johnson.
De Laura started the game off very well as he accounted for 85 passing yards and two touchdowns, to go along with another 26 yards on the ground and one rushing touchdown.
This all came to a halt though when he went down with a pulled hamstring in the second quarter.
Johnson picked up where he left off as he himself threw a touchdown pass with seven seconds left in the second quarter. He would go on and lead the team to victory and finish the game with 55 passing yards and three total passing touchdowns through the air.
When asked about how Johnson filled in for De Laura, Davis was pretty blunt in his response.
“Jayden pulled his hamstring,” Davis said. “Ja’Rome you’re an MVP, I need you to play like it and we made some good plays. We made some bone head plays, we just got to flush the bad plays and keep getting better.”
This was a game that was anchored on the defensive side of the ball as well as special teams. The Knight Hawks' defense played very well up front causing havoc for the Wranglers passing game all night.
The pressure up front really showed itself at the end of the first half as the Wranglers were backed up against their own goal line, which led to their quarterback throwing out of bounds while still being in the pocket resulting in a safety.
This was a shot of momentum that the knight hawks needed going into the second half.
Defensive lineman Claude Davis led the way up front causing the most pressure which led to 1.5 tackles for loss.
“Crafting every week as a group we feel like we are the best in the league,” he said. “So we take pride in it every week at practice and it translates to the game so it's a group effort forsure.”
The Knight Hawks will be taking on the San Antonio Gunslingers in their next game for the second time this season at Lee’s Family Forum on Saturday May 10th at 6 p.m.
