UNLV wins by 36 in pit-stop home game before road trip

Even in a pit-stop type home game, the UNLV Lady Rebels just can’t seem to lose at home.

Number 25 UNLV ousted San Jose State, 91-55, Wednesday, Jan. 10 from the Cox Pavilion to improve to 6-0 at home this season. In fact, the team is 23-0 at home over the last two seasons and haven’t suffered a loss inside the Cox Pavilion since Senior Day in 2022.

That makes four straight wins for the program since suffering its lone defeat of the season on the road at Seton Hall. Earlier this week, the team made its return to the Top-25 rankings.

Overall, the Lady Rebs is 13-1 on the year as it prepares for a two-game road trip which is set to begin Saturday, Jan. 13 against the Air Force Falcons. Tip-off is set for noon.

San Jose State scored the opening basket to take the first lead of the game but would be burned by a 9-0 run by the home team to take the lead for good. UNLV would eventually go up by 24 points in the first quarter behind an 11-0 run coupled with a 12-4 run to close the frame.

Before heading to the locker room for halftime, the Lady Rebels built a lead as large as 33 points. In the fourth quarter, it’d grow the largest of the game, 44 points.

Senior center Desi-Rae Young did it on both ends in the first half, posting 14 points and three steals. In fact, UNLV recorded 10 steals on the night as part of 18 forced turnovers.

Due to the stifling defense, the Lady Rebels raced out to 22 points off turnovers and 23 fast break points versus just two on the other end.

Young finished with a team-high 24 points on a near perfect 11-of-13 from the field to go along with six rebounds, four assists and a game-high four steals.

Coupled with 11 points from frontcourt teammate Nneka Obiazor, UNLV outscored San Jose State by 20 points in the paint en route to the win.

Reigning Mountain West Player of the Week Alyssa Brown followed up a career-high 17 rebounds with 14 more in this one in just 24 minutes of action. She helped the back-to-back Mountain West champions to a +25 rebounding advantage.

Aside from Young and Obiazor, two others reached double-figures both being in the starting backcourt for head coach Lindy La Rocque’s group.

Junior guard Alyssa Durazo-Frescas started for the first time since injuring her lower right leg two games ago. She made her presence immediately felt with back-to-back three-pointers in the early going of the first quarter on her way to four made threes on the night for a finishing mark of 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

Fellow frontcourt guard Kiara Jackson added 14 points of her own with three made long balls as well. The duo of Durazo-Frescas and Jackson accounted for seven of the team’s eight made threes.

Jackson was also one of four players who recorded at least four assists on the night with fifth-year guard Ashley Scoggin leading the way with a season-high five. In totality, the Lady Rebels handed out 23 assists on 34 made field goals.
